I am not one to watch "Reality TV" and I've never watched American Idol or anything like that, but the other night the TV was on in the background while I was doing homework so I actually heard some of the contestants sing. Wow, they are all so good! Made me envious.
I am good at a lot of things, but singing isn't one of them.
Anyone who has heard me attempt to sing knows this is true!
Good thing singing didn't effect my ability to play an instrument or appreciate music.
When I was in 2nd grade I decided that I HAD TO PLAY the FLUTE and I was hard-core about getting what I wanted. I wrote my dad a letter convincing him he had to buy me a flute and pay for me to take lessons. (I am pretty sure my mom saved that letter. If I find it, I will scan it and post here later!) I wanted it soooooo bad! After much convincing, he finally gave in. I started taking lessons from a neighbor who happened to be in the MN Orchestra. I was pretty dang good at playing that flute....I remember serenading my family with Christmas carols on Christmas, etc. I continued to play through 7th grade, but unfortunately the band teacher that year was a real A#1 jerk and made me begin to hate the flute. I quit band and played that flute at my own leisure. Then when I was 15 I had major jaw surgery and lost all feeling in my bottom lip and chin (Have I ever mentioned that before?). It made it impossible to continue to play the flute when I could no longer form my lips correctly. I gave it up completely.
I wish that I had learned to play the drums or the guitar, I'd be pretty bad-ass right about now!! Saxophone would be sweet too.
Just curious about everyone else.....are you a good singer? Were you ever in choir or band? What instruments did you play??? What would you play if you could play any instrument?

Well, other than having to play the recorder in 3rd grade (and Jasmine is now learning to play it too) I played piano for 8 years. Jasmine has also started taking piano lessons and has been playing for 9 months.
I actually tried to play fur elise the other night, and I am now determined to practice and learn how to play it correctly. That song was the end of my piano lessons. I hated it, and then hated playing piano. I can't blame the teacher bec it was Patty, our cousin, who is also Jasmine's teacher now. :) I was afraid of being punished for not wanting to play, I actually made my mom sign a contract stating that I wouldn't be grounded, punished, or withheld from seeing my friends or going out. But now I wish that I had stayed with it, I may try to teach myself now... Although Kevin will prob be real sick of it quick! :)

I played the recorder in the third grade too! ha ha ha
I'm definitely not a singer! I take it back. I'm a singer when alone in the car but that's about it! I did chorus for a short time in elementary school and middle school. I wish it was something that I continued. I stopped when you had to do a solo at tryouts. I was too embarrassed of myself to do it! Being shy and embarrassed and nervous has held be back from a lot of things. As far a musical instruments go.........would have loved to have learned how to play the piano or the saxophone. Maybe some day I'll take piano lessons :)

I'm a singer and I'm actually pretty good ;). I grew up in church choirs and was in gospel choir in high school. I wasn't interested in band or instruments. My mom was a saxophone player and played in middle school and high school. I tried piano but it didn't hold my interest as much as singing. My grandmother was a singer so I guess that's where I got it from because no one else in my family can hold a note. lolol

I pretend I'm a good singer in the car. LOL.
I did play the clarinet from 5th through 9th grade. I really enjoyed it. The only reason I quit in school was we were required to be in marching band along with regular band, I hated marching, and playing at games. I always wanted to learn how to play piano. I can play baa black sheep and part of the entertainer, I wish I knew more.

I was in the performing Orchestra in HS. I played viola. I wasn't very interested in it, and it showed because I never practiced. My dad taught me how to play guitar when I was about 12. I played "Blackbird" by the Beatles as my audition piece to get into the HS music program. I wanted to be in the guitar program, but with budget cuts, I wound up in the Orchestra. I currently don't play anything.

Ok I attempted piano lessons way back when but it never stuck. After that I never tried another intrument. I am however a good singer. I was in show choirs in high school and the regular school choir as well. Went to competitions and everything. I used to sing in church to do the "special music solo" a lot too. I enjoy belting things out when I'm in the house or car by myself. I can hit some pretty high notes too (I'm a soprano for the most part but can adapt to alto if needed). I don't read music all that well but enough to get me by. I love music though and enjoy many styles from new age, to rock, to pop, to Christian, to orchestra...I'm eclectic. Singing is about all I do...I would rather enjoy someone's elses talent with the instruments.
